LT-124-PCIe Video Compression Board

PCI Express Media Acquisition and Compression Board

The LT-124 is a dual DVI-D video capture board that has the capacity to compress two HDTV video signals in real-time without using the host computer’s CPU resources. The product is installed in an available PCI Express slot on your host system.

This board captures video from digital HD and SD video sources via two industry standard DVI connectors. This is also compatible to the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI®) 1.4a via an HDMI to DVI adapter.

3D capture and mixing is possible.

The LT-124 can extract embedded audio from the HDMI stream. The audio and video are always synchronized, in hardware, for lypsync.

The LT-124 compresses video in compliance with the H.264 and VC-1 standard. VC-1 is an SMPTE standard that is popularly known as WMV (Windows Media). Both these advanced compression formats are widely used in media, medical, streaming, broadcasting, etc., applications.

This powerful board can compress D1 to 1920x1080 (1080p/i) resolution signals at up to 60 frames per second (fps). If resolutions smaller than the source are required, the LT-124 can downscale the source to any size. The frame rate can also be reduced to any arbitrary value.

Compressed bitrates can vary between 64Kbit/s and 80Mbit/s depending on resolution, frame rate and quality desired.

An uncompressed video capture function is also available for snapshots or continuous raw video acquisition from either or both channels.

An optional DVI loop-though module does exit that can be connected to the LT-124 via a flat cable. Various processing can be applied to the loop-through video such as On Screen Display (OSD), filtering, alpha blending etc.

An optional DVI output module can be connected to the LT-124-PCIE via a Flexible Flat Cable thus allowing for real time video loop-through. LT-124-PCIE also captures and synchronizes stereo audio with the incoming video thus providing a complete multimedia acquisition and compression solution.

LT-101-PCI Video Compression Board

Media Acquisition & Compression Board

The LT-101-PCI is an HD video capture board that can compress HDTV video in real-time without using the host computer’s CPU resources. The LT-101-PCI is simply placed in in an available PCI (32-bit universal) slot or can alternatively be connected via USB to a host system.

This board captures video from both analog and digital HD and standard resolution video sources or cameras via DVI, HDMI, RGB, VGA, component, s-video, or composite using connectors on the PCI bracket.

In addition to compressing captured video, the LT-101-PCI can also from host internal video sources such as files or DirectShow devices.

These devices might include USB or Firewire cameras. For SDI sources an optional HD/SD-SDI adaptor daughter card is available. The LT-101-PCI is an encoder that compresses video in compliance with the VC-1/SMPTE-421M standard also referred to as WMV-HD or WMV9. This standard, originally developed by Microsoft, is natively supported by most popular software decoders and media players.

This board has the ability to acquire 1080p and 1920x1200 (WUXGA) at 60 fps (frames per second) as is capable of compressing of 1080 signals at up to 30 frames per second (fps).

At 2048x2048 resolutions the LT-101-PCI can encoded at 15fps.

If the frame rate/resolution combination is higher than the board can handle, a frame decimation unit can be enabled thus allowing the high frame/pixel rate source to be acquired and then compressed at a lower frame rate.

The resulting compressed bitrates can vary between 64Kbit/s and 80Mbit/s depending on resolution, frame rate and quality desired.

As LT-101-PCI compresses video it can also simultaneously function as an uncompressed/raw video frame grabber for preview or host processing.

If system or PCI bandwidth is insufficient for full frame rate transfers of uncompressed video, frames will be cleanly and automatically dropped. This essentially reduces the frame rate without broken images.

Along with video the LT-101-PCI also captures and compresses 2-channel audio thus providing a complete multimedia acquisition and compression solution.

The LT-102-PCIE is an HD video capture board that can compress HDTV video in real-time without using the host computer’s CPU resources. The product is installed in an available PCI Express slot on your host system.

This board captures video from both analog and digital HD and SD video sources via DVI, RGB, VGA, component, S-video, or composite connectors. In addition to external video sources, the LT-102-PCIE can compress from host internal video sources such as files or DirectShow devices including USB and Firewire cameras. An HD/SD-SDI option is available.

The LT-102-PCIE compresses video in compliance with the H.264/VC-1 standard also referred to as WMV-HD. This codec was originally developed by Microsoft, this format is supported natively by most software decoders. Audio is compressed via the WMA codec.

This powerful board can compress 1080p/i at up to 30 frames per second (fps). 2048x2048 can be encoded at 15fps. At lower resolutions the maximum compression frame rate increases. If the frame rate is higher than the board can handle, frame decimation can be enabled allowing high frame rate source to be acquired at a lower frame rate.

The LT-122 is a dual channel 3G/HD/SD-SDI video capture board that has the capacity to compress two HDTV video signals in real-time without using the host computer’s CPU resources. The product is installed in an available PCI Express slot on your host system.

This board captures video from SMPTE compliant SDI video sources via two industry standard BNC connectors. The LT-122 can extract multichannel embedded audio from the SDI stream. For external analog audio capture a stereo jack is provided. The audio and video are always synchronized, in hardware, for lypsync.

LT-125-USB Video Encoder Hardware

Video Compression/Decompression Evaluation Platform

The LT-125 is a Lattice Semiconductor ECP3 FPGA based board for the evaluation of Enciris Technologies’ HD and SD video compression and decompression IP. The LT-125 is designed to demonstrate high performance h.264/AVC and VC-1 encoding and decoding in FPGA applications.

This board is equipped with an HDMI input, a DVI input with both single and dual link capabilities, and an SMPTE 3G/HD/SD-SDI input. These inputs can be used for one or multiple channel video capture and acquisition. An HDMI output is also provided for display in pass-through or decoding applications.

As the LT-125 uses FPGA technology for video processing, it is inherently very flexible and can be configured for a multitude of operations. Enciris Technologies supplies tools to change the LT-125 operating modes by using a choice of different FPGA configurations. The supplied LT-125 configurations are full featured and have additional functionality that is not included in our standard h.264 and VC-1 IP deliverables.

Multiple configuration are available including single channel H.264 compression, dual channel H.264 compression, dual channel VC-1 compression, etc. Some modes of operation are still under development and more will be added.

Easy to use demo applications are included demonstrating the mode of operation. Using the resources of a Lattice ECP3-150 and four 32-bit Mobile DDRs the LT-125 can be configured to compress up to either two channels of 1080p HDTV at 30 frames per second video simultaneously or one channel of 1080p at 60 frames per second. Up to four channels of HDTV can be decompressed with the LT-125.

Functional Description

The LT-125 evaluation module includes video input and output connectors, a series of video input equalizers and a level shifter, a Lattice ECP3-150 FPGA, DDR memories, a Lattice XP2-8, a USB device controller, power management electronics and a USB device controller. These functions are detailed in the block diagram above.

The FPGA has access to four Low Power Mobile DDRs. These are 32-bit DDRs with a capacity of 256Mbits each that operate at up to 133MHz using Enciris Technologies' proprietary video optimized DDR controller IP. The LT-125 is not equipped with a permanent ECP3 configuration device (i.e. Flash memory) and the configuration bitstream is uploaded from the host PC via USB each time the board is used. This method allows for quick changes of configuration without requiring the use of the JTAG port. Typically the ECP3 takes only a second or two to be reconfigured.

A Lattice XP2 FPGA is responsible for efficiently transferring packets of data (e.g. compressed, uncompressed video, and parameters) to and from the USB device controller. The LT-125 to host USB transfer rate is limited by the USB bandwidth.

The LT-125 is operated by installing supplied software packages on a host PC. For each LT-125 mode of operation a specific demo application is provided with a corresponding FPGA configuration bitstream. Windows XP/Vista/7 32/64 operating systems are supported.

The LT-125 uses no host CPU resources for compression or decompression and as such host requirements are minimal.
