Description

This member of the 2600 series of smart I/O modules connects to an Ethernet via a 2601 communication module. It reads four incremental encoders with 32-bit precision. The 2620’s microcontroller provides I/O service to the remote 2601 client via a category-3 cable. The cable supplies isolated serial communication and power to the 2620’s microcontroller.

32-bit counters
The four quadrature encoder inputs and index inputs may be differential (RS-232/422/485) or single-ended TTL. Counting resolution can be increased by selecting x2 or x4 counting modes. Each counter may be programmed to cause an interrupt when it overflows. The current value of a counter may be read without affecting the counting process. Counters may be configured as timers by counting pulses. 

All field wiring is connected directly to the 2620 via removable terminal blocks as shown in the photo. This minimizes downtime should it become necessary to replace a 2620 module. It also eliminates the need for separate terminal block assemblies.

Gate Generator
The 2620 has a fifth counter channel intended for use as a gate generator. Hence, it is not necessary to sacrifice one of the 32-bit counter channels when measuring frequency. This gate may be programmed for times of 1 mS to 16 seconds.

Incremental Encoder
Any channel will count quadrature or single-phase inputs. Any counter can be forced to a preset value by triggering a transfer from the preload register. This trigger may be from the index input or through software.

The maximum encoder counting rate is 10 MHz. When counting one edge from both encoder outputs the maximum rate is 5 MHz. Counting the rising and falling edges of both encoder signals can be done at 2.5 MHz.

Pulse Generator
Each counter can be programmed to generate a single output pulse, i.e. single shot, for every hardware or software trigger. The pulse duration is determined by a value in the preload register.

PWM Generator
Each counter may be configured to produce a periodic output with programmable period and duty cycle.

Single PW measurement
The width of a single event pulse can measured when it is connected to the index input.

Period Measurement
The period of a square wave signal connected to the index input may be measured by using the internal 20 MHz clock.

Frequency Measurement
This mode measure the frequency of a periodic signal applied to a counter channel. The count gate may be the internal gate generator or another counter channel.
